4 Pubs in Rye selected by the
Guardian/Observer
for their BEST PUBS GUIDE: June 2009The Ypres Castle Inn
Presiding over Romney marshes and the river Rother,
higgledy-piggledy Rye is one of southern England's most alluring
towns. The garden of this pub, which is a quaint pile in the
white weather-boarded Sussex vernacular, is one of the best
places to enjoy the view.

The Ship Inn
A close relation to London's Engineer, this is one of the
newer ventures in Rye, bringing a blast of modern seaside chic
to the cinque port. Situated at the bottom of the town on the
salty Rother estuary, it has a suitably maritime atmosphere,
evinced by its location on Mermaid Street as well as a rich past
as a smugglers' warehouse.

The Plough, Udimore
Just two-and-a-half miles
outside of the historic cinque port town of Rye, The Plough at
Cock Marling is a quintessential country pub complete with
rustic curios hanging from the walls and ceilings, two log
burners and a beer garden. Add to this a medley of local,
national and international folk, blues, jazz and acoustic bands,
and you have a truly winning recipe.

Queens Head, Icklesham
Because of the
sensational hilltop aspect, the sturdy food, and the delightful
building, which is hard to miss: its name is emblazoned on the
roof.
